Cowilla Prize Sapphire (Classified 90VHC)

Bred by SB & R Vivian

Owned & Exhibited by SR, LP & BK Manuel (Meadows)

Congratulations to Steve, Lyn & Belinda Manuel on achieving Champion Cow for Type with Cowilla Prize Sapphire

(a Glenamore Top Prize daughter) in the

South Australian Jersey Breeders Society on Farm Challenge in both 2005 & 2006

She then went on to the Semex Great Southern Challenge (South Australia) where she won champion cow for type overall.

In the Semex Great Southern Challenge (Australia) she came 4th.

She had also over the past two years won Champion Jersey Cow at several agricultural shows.

The following is a report from Semex.

Sapphire shines again!

Four of the best Jersey cows in South Australia have been selected to contest the finals of the 2006 Semex Jersey Australia Great Southern Challenge, one of the largest livestock judging competitions in the southern hemisphere.

Leading the South Australian team will be the competition’s reigning Mature Champion, Cowilla Prize Sapphire HC88, entered by Steven, Lynette and Belinda Manuel of Bellview Jerseys, Meadows.

The Manuel family had further success in also exhibiting the Champion Two Year Old, Brimarvi Blaine Fowler.

The two other animals selected to represent SA are the Champion Three Year Old, Ronaldo 2283 Star, entered by the Stewart family of Stewartdale Jerseys, Murray Bridge; and the Champion Four Year Old, Enchantress 72, entered by Peter and Wendy Ness of Nyowee Jerseys, Mt Compass.

The Semex Jersey Australia Great Southern Challenge differs from conventional livestock judging events in that cattle are assessed on their home property.

Separate competitions are conducted by 12 AJBS Branches and Cattle Clubs throughout Victoria, South Australia, southern NSW and Tasmania during spring. The highest-scoring animals from each competition are then “over-judged” in early December.

Australian Jersey Breeders Society Executive Officer, Scott Joynson, said the competition’s format enabled all breeders to compete on an equal basis, regardless of their location.

“This format really appeals to dairy farmers because no preparation of cattle is required,” he said. “This competition attracts about 1,800 entries from 850 breeders, which represents more than 80 per cent of our organisation’s membership.

AJBS SA Branch Secretary and SA On-Farm Jersey Challenge coordinator, Megan March, said this year’s competition attracted almost 100 entries from 18 different breeders.

“This year’s event was extremely well supported by our members and they certainly showcased the cream of the crop as far as South Australian Jerseys go,” she said.

“The calibre of cows entered was truly remarkable and we wish the Manuel, Stewart and Ness families all the best for the Semex Jersey Australia Great Southern Challenge.

“Our judge, Ted Codling from Glenara Jerseys, Dreeite, Victoria, did a fantastic job. He has a great eye for breeding and provided some wonderful advice and feedback along the way.

“All the participants appreciated Ted’s attention to detail and, thanks to his expertise, South Australia heads towards the Great Southern Challenge with a great line-up of entries.”

Other successful breeders in the SA On-Farm Jersey Challenge included Tim and Sue Thorn’s Fleurieu Jerseys, Hope Forest, who exhibited the Champion Production cow, Fleurieu Astound Selly 2 and the Mature Production Cow, Fleurieu Berretta Selly.

The results of the 2006 Semex Jersey Australia Great Southern Challenge will be announced at a special function to be held at Witchmount Winery outside Melbourne on Wednesday, 13th December.

Semex Pty Ltd General Manager, Jim Conroy, said the Semex Alliance was dedicated to breeding cows that feature a balance of high production and superior type in order to maximise lifetime profitability.

“As such, we are more than happy to sponsor any event that recognises the importance of conformation in breeding long-lasting, profitable cows,” he said.

Semex Pty Ltd is the exclusive Australian distributor of livestock genetics marketed by the Semex Alliance, the world’s largest artificial breeding organisation.
